Capillary electrophoresis of proteins 2001–2003

Abstract: This review article with 244 references describes recent developments in capillary electrophoresis of proteins and covers the two years since the previous review (Dolník, V. Hutterer, K. Electrophoresis 2001, 22, 4163-4178) through Spring 2003. It covers topics related to CE of proteins including modeling of the electrophoretic properties of proteins, sample pretreatment, wall coatings, improving selectivity, detection, special electrophoretic techniques, and applications.

“…MS data in general are highly desirable not only in stability and purity studies [24,25] but also for revealing and monitoring diagnostic marker peptides and proteins. In capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)-ESI-MS, mass accuracies down to 0.0008% have been realized for model mixtures of proteins [26].The high number of reviews published in the recent years, dealing not only with CE separations of proteins and peptides [27,28], but also with CE-ESI-MS coupling in general [19,20,23,29,30] …”

“…Specific reviews or books dedicated to CE analysis of peptides [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] and proteins [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] have been published, outlining that the extremely small id of the capillary has the advantage of requiring small sample volumes but often presents poor mass sensitivity. This is observed particularly with UV absorbance detection due to the short optical path length across the capillary.…”

“…The increasing use of this coupled technique can be inferred by the high number of reviews published involving the use of CE-MS for proteins and peptides analysis [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] as well as for other biomolecules [7,[13][14][15] or more general CE-MS developments and applications [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”
