“…Here, we demonstrate that ArtinM-induced proliferation of murine spleen cells is independent of TLR2. Most of the lectins assayed by Muraille et al (1999), and now verified for ArtinM, have been shown to stimulate both lymphocyte proliferation and IL-12 production, suggesting that they recognize specific oligosaccharides on the surface of the cells involved in adaptative and innate immunity.…”

“…Although mandatory, evaluation of the ArtinM direct effect on cells of the adaptive immunity has been withdrawn. Indeed, correlation between the properties of several plant lectins of stimulating IL-12 production and inducing lymph proliferation has been examined previously and showed that only wheat germ agglutinin of Triticum vulgare induced IL-12 production without promoting cell proliferation or IL-2 release (Muraille et al 1999). Here, we demonstrate that ArtinM-induced proliferation of murine spleen cells is independent of TLR2.…”

“…Despite the fact that PHA is one of the mitogenic lectins endowed with IL-12-inducing activity [17], the presence of C3bgp showed additive effect on the IL-12 production in PHA stimulating culture. Since IL-12 is not produced by T cells [12][13][14], the increased IL-12 production observed following stimulation with C3bgp might be due to stimulation of monocytes and/ or B cells.…”

“…14 Some studies have shown the involvement of lectins in cell signaling initiated by TLRs, 14 -16 as well as in the induction or amplification of IL-12 17,18 and IFN-␥ 19,20 production. Our group has previously shown that BALB/c mice prophylactically treated with KM ϩ , a D-mannose-binding lectin from the seeds of Artocarpus integrifolia, develop a Th1 protective response against Leishmania major infection.…”
