Carbohydrate fluctuations, gas vacuolation, and vertical migration of scum‐forming cyanobacteria in fishponds1

Abstract: Natural populations of the scum-forming cyanobacteria Oscillatoria, Spirulina, and Microcystis showed a diel vertical migration pattern in fishponds. This migration was governed by two factors, light and nitrogen. Light penetrates only into the upper layers of these shallow waterbodies, while combined nitrogen is detectable only in the pond sediment. Migration between these two layers was correlated with cellular carbohydrate accumulation at the top layer and its degradation at the bottom. Gas-vacuole collapse… Show more

“…2). The 0300-h peak resulted from an accumulation of M. aeruginosa in the surface water caused by a wellknown diel vertical migration by M. aeruginosa (30,43). The PC-IGS gene copy numbers in the second sampling also showed a pattern similar to that in the first (Fig.…”

“…The most comprehensive studies of changes in excess density have concerned the buoyancy of blue-green algae, where overall buoyancy conferred by gas vesicles can be modified by changes in cellular carbohydrate (e.g. van Rijn & Shilo 1985, Walsby et al 1989, Ibelings et al 1991, Romans et al 1994.…”
