Carbon Dioxide Capture by Aqueous Ionic Liquid Solutions

Abstract: Confined water in aqueous solutions of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) associated with acetate and imidazolate anions react reversibly with CO to yield bicarbonate. Three types of CO sorption in these "IL aqueous solutions" were observed: physical, CO -imidazolium adduct generation, and bicarbonate formation (up to 1.9 mol mol of IL), resulting in a 10:1 (molar ratio) total absorption of CO relative to imidazolate anions in the presence of water 1:1000 (IL/water). These sorption values are higher than th… Show more

“…Especially in the case of the anion OAc, strong interactions with water have been detected without disruption of the IL organization in ion pairs (as demonstrated by HOESY experiments) ,. As previously reported, and reinforced here, the bicarbonate obtained by CO 2 reacting with water can be observed by 13 C NMR experiment ( ca 160 ppm, see Figure a). According to these data, we can appoint this group as cationic/anionic influencers .…”

“…It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the other effects previously discussed, all the ILs investigated (Table ) perform physisorption, although dissolved CO 2 has not been observed by 13 C NMR, probably due to the small natural abundance of 13 C …”

“…The recent literature has also revealed remarkable insights into the interactions of CO 2 with ILs. ILs containing basic anions (such as imidazolate and triazolate) or dialkylimidazolium cations (usually associated with the acetate anion) can covalently interact with CO 2 , yielding carbamates and carboxylates, respectively (Scheme ) . It has been proposed that H + ions released during the formation of imidazolium carbonates (Scheme B) may act as a source of H + ions during electroreduction of CO 2 .…”

“…However, the low concentration of hydroxide ion (OH − ) and poor conductivity of neutral electrolytes affect the catalytic activity of MnO x catalysts 15 . Also, the low zincate solubility of neutral electrolytes would make the passivation issue even worse 16 .…”
