Carbon disulfide. Just toxic or also bioregulatory and/or therapeutic?

Abstract: The overview presented here has the goal of examining whether carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) may play a role as an endogenously generated bioregulator and/or has therapeutic value. The neuro-and reproductive system toxicity of CS 2 has been documented from its long-term use in the viscose rayon industry. CS 2 is also used in the production of dithiocarbamates (DTCs), which are potent fungicides and pesticides, thus raising concern that CS 2 may be an environmental toxin. However, DTCs also have recognized medicinal … Show more

“…Recent studies suggest that CS 2 may have has specific protective activities in biological systems, and may be an emerging biologically-relevant sulfur-containing small molecule. 76 Aligned with this idea, we prepared PeroxyDTCM-1 and 2 , both of which cage CS 2 into dithiocarbamate compounds. Much like H 2 O 2 -labile PeroxyTCMs and PeroxyTCNs , the PeroxyDTCMs should be activated by H 2 O 2 to generate anionic dithiocarbamate intermediates, which could release CS 2 instead of COS. (Scheme 3).…”

“…CS 2 diproduksi secara industrial melalui proses pemanasan karbon seperti arang atau gas alam dengan sulfur sejak abad ke 19 (17). Saat itu efek merugikan pada pekerja yang terpajan di industri rayon viskos mulai teridentifikasi (17).…”

“…Industrially, carbon disulfide is used to produce viscose rayon in bulk quantities, which can be used in apparel and in cellophane production . Carbon disulfide is reacted with a primary or secondary alcohol and a metal hydroxide to form a xanthate, which is then decomposed via an acid catalyzed disproportionation to produce viscose rayon, water, and regenerated carbon disulfide . Measures are in place to recover the carbon disulfide used in the manufacturing process, as it is has been found to be harmful to human health and the environment.…”

[4] Measures are in place to recover the carbon disulfideu sed in the manufacturing process, as it is has been found to be harmful to human health and the environment. The most common trace precursor to sulfur dioxide in the stratosphere and troposphere is carbonyl sulfide, COS, which is an intermediate speciesi nt he hydrolysis of carbon disulfide.…”
