We have studied the electronic structure and charge-carrier dynamics of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and nanotube ropes using optical and electron-spectroscopic techniques. The electronic structure of semiconducting SWNTs in the band-gap region is analyzed using near-infrared absorption spectroscopy. A semi-empirical expression for E S 11 transition energies, based on tight-binding calculations is found to give striking agreement with experimental data. Time-resolved PL from dispersed SWNT-micelles shows a decay with a time constant of about 15 ps. Using time-resolved photoemission we also find that the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling in metallic tubes is characterized by a very small e-ph mass-enhancement of 0.0004. Ultrafast electronelectron scattering of photo-excited carriers in nanotube ropes is finally found to lead to internal thermalization of the electronic system within about 200 fs.

The behavior of gold atoms depending on the CNT chirality in a nanojoining process is studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The deformation regularity and the diffusing characteristic of the gold particle during the joining process, as well as the C-Au bonds distribution in the final joint are studied. Our results show that when joining with higher spirality CNT, gold particle tends to deform more. With the CNT more similar to armchair type, the gold particle as a whole displaces more. In the final joint, the total bonds number decreases from typical armchair CNT to typical zig-zag CNT. However, the bonds distribution in detail is irregular from joint to joint, which is the consequence of lattice structure of both materials.

A series of double walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) and multi walled nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized with selected organic chromophores, fluorescein 5(6) isothiocyanate (FITC), rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RITC) and fullerene (C 60 ) were synthesized by covalently linking these electron donor groups to the metallic nanotubes. These versatile carbon nanotube composites show remarkable nonlinear optical (NLO) performance, due to a merged effect of the complementary NLO characteristics of the moieties of the composites. The hybrids were characterized by UV Vis spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Evidence suggests charge transfer species are formed between the chromophores and the nanotubes. The optical limiting performance of the DWNT, MWNT hybrids and carbon NanoBuds is found to be superior to that of single walled nanotubes. Thermally induced light scattering from nanotube moieties is the primary mechanism dominating the NLO response. Reverse saturable absorption from fullerene moieties makes a significant contribution to the NLO response of fullerene containing hybrids and NanoBuds. Photoinduced charge transfer from the fullerenes or the organic chromophores (FITC and RITC) to nanotubes followed by absorption in the charge separated excited state may enhance the nonlinear absorption, thus an effective optical limiting response.
