Carbon, Nitrogen and Sulphur concentration and δ13C, δ15N values in Hypogymnia physodes within the montane area – preliminary data

Abstract: The contribution of C, N and S, as well as the isotopic composition of C and N of atmospheric pollutants, are assumed to be reflected in the organic compounds inbuilt into the lichen thallus. The chemical and isotopic analyses were carried out on lichen Hypogymnia physodes samples gathered from Picea abies and Larix decidua, collected in 13 sampling points located in Karkonoski National Park and its closest vicinity in 2011. The results for %C, %N and %S varied from 43.44 to 46.79%, from 0.86 to 1.85% and from… Show more

“…Lichens are one of the most commonly used bioindicators of air pollution, which is proved by the number of studies devoted to them (Adamo et al, 2003; Ciężka et al, 2016; Kłos et al, 2018; Stojanowska et al, 2020). This is because their uptake depends strictly on atmospheric deposition (Bargagli et al, 2002).…”

“…Bioindicators have already be proven to be excellent environmental proxies, from which pertinent information can be obtained by studying their carbon isotope compositions (e.g. Brendel et al, 2003;M. Ciężka et al, 2016).…”
