“…[3][4][5] Due to its excellent chemical and mechanical properties such as high rigidity, good thermal shock resistance and chemical stability, Alon has become a potential ceramic material for high-performance structural and advanced refractory applications. 6,7 In addition, it has been processed into a fully dense transparent material which showed promising mechanical and optical properties suitable for use in infrared and visible window applications. 8 Zirconium nitride (ZrN) is becoming an attractive material because of its excellent chemical and physical properties such as high chemical and thermal stability with a melting point of 2980 • C, high hardness, abrasive resistance and good electrical conductivity.…”

“…Compared with other methods [4][5][6][7][8], it is easytofabricate AlON compounds through ap reeminent solid-state synthesis method called aluminothermic reduction and nitridation (ARN), in which Al 2 O 3 and aluminum (high-reac-tivity) powdersare mixed as starting materials [7,8]. However, there remain several issues to be addressed, one of which is the influence of the composition of raw starting materials.…”

“…Specifically, previous studies have shownt hat as an on-oxidec eramic material, AlON can onlybesynthesized by means of high-temperature solid-state reaction methods [4][5][6][7][8] because strong crystalline coarsening can hardly be avoided under high synthesis temperature (above 1500 8 C). Therefore, reduction and precise controlo ft he synthesis temperature is crucial in the pre-parationofAlON powder.…”

“…The two-step method is a frequently used method and AlON powder is usually fabricated by carbothermal reduction of Al 2 O 3 and direct reaction of Al 2 O 3 and AlN. [15][16][17][18][19] In the carbothermal method, the temperature for single-phase AlON synthesis is above 2073 K (1800°C), and as one of the raw materials, carbon would easily introduce the carbon impurity to the resultant powder and cause the transmittance decrease if it is not completely eliminated. [17] In the direct reaction method, AlN powder used in the experiment was usually in micron scale, which made the obtained AlON powder with large grain size and low sintering activity.…”
