Carcinogenesis in rats subjected to a new model ureterosigmoidostomy and treated with L-lysine

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the effects of L-lysine on the intestinal and urothelial epithelium of rats subjected to ureterosigmoidostomy (new model for surgical carcinogenesis). METHODS:Forty-two rats, 9 weeks of age, were divided into 6 groups. Animals in groups A, B, C were subjected to ureterosigmoidostomy (US) and treated with L-lysine, celecoxib and H 2 O, respectively. Groups D, E and F (non-operated controls) received L-lysine, celecoxib and H 2 O, respectively. The L-lysine dose was 150 mg/kg and that of cele… Show more

“…Similar reductions in the number of goblet cells and mucins were decribed in studies on cystoplasties and urinary diversions in humans 24,28 and animal experiments 29,30. Acid mucin reduction has also been observed in the descending colon of rats submitted to chemical carcinogenesis 31 .…”

“…On the other hand, L -lysine failed to promote carcinogenesis in a rat model of bladder cancer submitted to ureterosigmoidostomy and vesico-sigmoidostomy. ( 32 , 33 ) However, L -lysine accelerated the development of transitional metaplasia in intestinal epithelium in rats submitted to cystoplasty. ( 34 )…”
