Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate

Abstract: A case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma arising in the soft palate is reported. The tumour presented had enlarged gradually over 10 years and finally occupied the oral cavity. The patient was admitted to our hospital due to disturbance of her speech and swallowing, and a sudden haemorrhage from the tumour. The initial pathological diagnosis by open biopsy was benign pleomorphic adenoma. After total resection, histological examination revealed that the tumour was composed partly of benign pleomorphic adenoma… Show more

“…CXPA predominantly affects the major salivary glands with a majority of cases noted in the parotid and submandibular glands. The cancer has been known to manifest in the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity, particularly the hard and soft palate [54][55][56]. It has a prevalence rate of 5.6 cases per 100,000 malignant neoplasm's and a yearly incidence rate of 0.17 tumors per one million persons [51].…”

“…Although rare, this condition has been reported to be responsible for 4.5-15% of salivary gland malignancies. [1][2][3] Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) has no distinctive sex predilection, 4 and is more frequent in the 5-6th decades of life. 3 5 These tumours are highly aggressive, with high rates of metastasis, 6 and carry a poor overall prognosis.…”

“…3 5 These tumours are highly aggressive, with high rates of metastasis, 6 and carry a poor overall prognosis. 4 It has been suggested that a carcinoma may develop within a recurrent PA or when it remains untreated over an extended period of time. 7 8 Despite the recognised clinical importance of CXPA, little is known about its biology.…”
