Carcinosarcoma of the Bladder: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. In these tumors, histogenesis and biological behaviour remain controversial. Approximately 70 cases have been reported in the literature, usually as case reports or a small series. A series of 221 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program database has been reported recently. Optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma… Show more

“…The most frequent location of sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma is the lateral wall of the bladder. However, previous studies have shown the commonest location to be trigone of the bladder which gives evidence for the origin of the tumor from wolffian body [5]. pattern of distribution with base showing increased cellularity and towards the surface are hypocellular and myxoid regions [7].…”

“…Most of the available literature is case reports and literature reviews with small numbers of cases. [6][7][8][9] To the best of our knowledge, no prospective study or clinical trial on BCS has been published, and only two retrospective studies published in English included a large sample size. [12][13][14] One identified 221 BCS patients in the SEER 17 registries diagnosed between 1973 and 2004; the other enrolled 3007 patients with genitourinary sarcomas diagnosed from 1973 to 2015 from the SEER 18 registries.…”

“…5 Published case reports indicate that BCS has high rates of recurrence and metastasis, and patients present with poor differentiation and advanced stage, leading to poor prognosis. [6][7][8][9] In addition, BCS is thought to have outcomes similar to those of bladder TCC. 10 The sample sizes of previous studies are too small to provide conclusive results.…”

“…Carcinosarcomas might arise in in different organs like the oropharynx, the lung, the male genital system and the female reproductive organs with the so-called Malignant Mixed Müllerian tumour, the most often detected type of carcinosarcoma 3 , 4 . Carcinosarcomas within the bladder are very rare, accounting for only approximately 0.11% of all primary bladder tumours 5 . Epidemiologically carcinosarcomas of the bladder are a tumour entity that occurs more often in elder males in their seventh decade 6 , 7 .…”
