“…5,18,21 Veterinary cardiology has witnessed a recent interest in the role of cardiac biomarkers in assessing cardiac status of veterinary patients. 2 Various investigators have examined the ability of atrial or brain natriuretic peptides 3,8,9,12 or of cTnI or cTnT 17,18,20,22 to either identify cardiac disease status or prognosticate on outcome in patients with myocardial damage. In addition, equine myocardial injury with performance or disease has been increasingly investigated by measuring cTnI.…”

“…Following cardiac injury, troponins are released into the circulation from damaged myocytes. Elevated levels are detectable in the blood within four hours of cardiac damage and reach a peak value within 12 to 24 hours, and then slowly decline over the next five to 20 days, depending on the degree of initial damage (30,31,33). In our study, positive rate of cTn-I level was detected in non-survival dogs.…”

“…It should be noted, however, that cardiac neoplasia in general does not readily exfoliate, and also that reactive mesothelial cells from the pericardial cavity commonly are misdiagnosed as being neoplastic [19]. Different parameters, including pH and cardiac troponins, have been assessed with varying success as potentially useful indicators of etiology in pericardial effusion [17,[29][30][31][32][33]. Unfortunately, the overall diagnostic value of pericardial fluid analysis remains quite low for detecting most tumors, and results should in general be interpreted cautiously.…”
