“…One diff erence between the 2 studies was that Lundberg [ 10 ] claimed to have established a true maximal response using commonly accepted criteria [ 12 ] , whereas we reported what seems a more realistic criterion of peak values for children with CP. However, as others [ 13 ] also have noted, the V . O 2 peak proved a stable criterion for both able-bodied subjects and non-exercising children with CP.…”

“…All subjects underwent 2 progressive cycle ergometer tests (Ergometer 824 E, Monark Exercise AB, Kroonsväg 1, S-780 50 Vansbro, Sweden) separated by an interval of 1 week. The fi rst test was for familiarization and habituation [ 19 ] , to check the protocol and to determine which children needed to have their feet strapped to the pedals with Velcro [ 13 ] ; this proved necessary for 6 subjects with CP (3 in the exercise group and 3 controls). The defi nitive cardio-respiratory test (CRT) began with a 5-min warm up, followed by 6-12 min at an increasing intensity of exercise and a pedalling rate of 50 rpm paced by metronome (an initial power output of 30 W, increased by 15 W every minute to exhaustion).…”

“…Skeletal muscle fatigue was measured for the quadriceps on an isokinetic apparatus using a methodology described previously. 17 Earlier studies 4,17 have shown the safety of isometric strength and muscle endurance testing in children with cerebral palsy. Control participants were seated and positioned at knee and hip angles of 60 and 120 , respectively.…”

“…All the tests were preceded by a warm-up of about 5 minutes on the Cybex. 17 The children were then strapped at chest and knee levels to maintain these angular positions. For all able-bodied children, the right leg was used for testing.…”
