Caries Prevalence in Norwegian Recruits 5–7 Years after Discontinuation of Supervised Fluoride Toothbrushing Programmes

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not supervised fluoride toothbrushing programmes at school gave reduced caries prevalence among former participants 5–7 years after discontinuation. The 121 male military recruits of group A had brushed their teeth with an 0.5–1% sodium fluoride solution 3–5 times per year for at least 6 years, while the 64 subjects of group B had not. There were on average 3–4 fewer DMFS in group A than in group B. The results suggest some long-term benefit of limited prac… Show more

“…Accordingly, some of the effect of posteruptive tooth age was mediated by baseline prevalence, a finding which sttpports DOWNER'S reasoning (6). It should also be mentioned that caries prevalence at age 13/4 was based upon total registration of tteatment t-eceived -while caries prevalence at age 20 derived from partial recording (15). This may have affected the relationship, and has probably led to an underestimation of the strength of the association.…”

“…The corresponding frgrrr-es at age 14 were > 17 DMFS (n = 50) and <17 DMFS (;( = 64), r-espectively. Mean initial DMFS for the dilTerent groups are shown in Table 1, Materiat 2 came from a study of caries prevalence in 20-year'old Norwegian recruits 5-7 years after discontintration of supervised fltroride toothbrushing programs (15), Records of treatr-nent received up to \3% years of age were available for' 90 subjects. For this subgroup caries prevalence at ages 13 fz and 20 were available, but caries prevalence was determirred in difler'ent ways at the two ages.…”

“…The studies available on the long-term effect of caries preventive agents or procedures are few, and have given equivocal results (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). However, for the assessment of the value of a preventive prograrn it is important to know whether the effect on dental caries is temporary or lasting and infon'nation on the possible long-term effeets is also needed for costeffectiveness analyses (8).…”

“…Reports of the post‐discontinuation effects of other preventive dental programs using fluoride varnishes, mouthwashes, and toothbrushing have been controversial. A sustained protective effect was found by some authors (22–25), although this benefit appears to diminish over the long term, after longer follow‐up times (26). However, the action mechanism of fluoride is different from that of chlorhexidine.…”
