Carotene in the leaves of the carrot

Abstract: Leaves of carrot plants of cultivated varieties contained an average of I 19 mg. of total carotene per kg. fresh weight, or 546 mg. per kg. dry weight. The concentration of total carotene bused on uvevuges of many batches was approximately constant through the season so long its the leaves remained healthy in appearance, and except for small seedlings, was independent of the age of the plant. The average concentration was the same during three successive years. There was, however, a variation between individual… Show more

“…In the current study, however, all diets were readily consumed, and the highest rates of survival and growth were observed for E. marinus with dried Fucus and for G. locusta with dried carrot leaves. The high survival of G. locusta when fed carrot leaves might be partially explained by high levels of carotenoids in carrot leaves, which can be higher than 700 mg per 100 g of dry weight (Booth 1957, Perrin et al 2016. Specimens of this treatment group featured more intense pigmentation and had a dark orange colouration after freezedrying ( Fig.…”

“…a-Carotene constituted WOlo of the total (MacKinney, 1935). Later, a higher value of 13% was determined, namely in the leaves of carrots having appreciable total carotenes in the roots; it was already detectable in their cotyledons (Booth, 1956(Booth, , 1957.…”

“…Total carotene content was 60 to 170 ILg (g fresh wt) -I, the concentration remaining nearly constant through the season. The concentration of leaf total carotenes was independent of the variety (Booth, 1957). a-Carotene constituted WOlo of the total (MacKinney, 1935).…”
