Carotid body tumor: Ultrastructural observations

Abstract: Ultrastructural features of a typical carotid body tumor revealed the close resemblance of this neoplasm to the normal carotid body. This included duplication of the basic structural unit of this organ, as well as the presence of tumor cells homologous to the normal Type I and II cells. A dual population of neurosecretory‐type granules was observed, which could be seen to be at least partially assembled within the Golgi apparatus. Finally, fine structural similarities to the alveolar soft‐part sarcoma were not… Show more

“…The histologic features (Richards & Mawdesley-Thomas, 1969;Glenner & Grimley, 1974;Patnaik, Lord & Liu, 1974;Dean & Strafuss, 1975;Patnaik et a/., 1975;Van Nes et al, 1978) and ultrastructural (Grimley & Glenner, 1967;Cheville, 1972;Alpert & Bochetto, 1974;Glenner & Grimley, 1974;Robertson & Cooney, 1980) features of paragangliomas at different sites in man and the dog have been described. Roentgenographic aspects of human head and neck chemodectomas have also been described (Palacios, 1970).…”

“…Biochemical, histochemical, and ultrastructural studies have shown that all the paraganglia store catecholamine granules in the chief cells, and that the tumour cells are neoplastic chief cells containing catecho-L. K. Lacquet, A. C. Moulijn, C. M. Jongerius, M. Limburg, and J. B. Rensing lamine granules (Alpert and Bochetto, 1974). The previous distinction between chromaffin and nonchromaffin has therefore become obsolete.…”
