Carotid Intima-media Thickness and its Association with Conventional Risk Factors in Low-income Adults: A Population-based Cross-Sectional Study in China

Abstract: Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is an established predictor of cardiovascular disease and stroke. However, risk factors associated with CIMT remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to identify factors associated with CIMT in a low-income Chinese population. Stroke-free and cardiovascular disease-free residents aged ≥45 years were recruited. B-mode ultrasonography was performed to measure CIMT. The mean age of participants (n = 3789) was 59.92 years overall, 61.13 years in men, and 59.07 years in women (P < 0… Show more

“…In comparisons with several Asian samples of populationbased studies, the mean CIMT of our lowest atherosclerosis-risk subgroup (mean age 34.4 years), at 0.66 mm, was higher than the 0.56-0.58 mm noted in a study of Taiwanese older adults with an average of 50 years old (Su et al, 2015), 0.48-0.55 mm noted in a study of Korean adults aged 40-49 years (Youn et al, 2011), and 0.54 mm noted in a Chinese population aged 45-54 years (Liu et al, 2017). These comparisons suggest that CIMT increases before middle age in patients with BD.…”

“…A study from France showed that, after adjusting for confounding variables, an increased CIMT was the only factor significantly and independently associated with high PP, irrespective of the effectiveness of blood pressure control and antihypertensive drug treatments ( 19 ). Our previous study showed a positive association between SBP and CIMT and a negative association between DBP and CIMT ( 16 ). However, the current study showed different results in the univariate analysis.…”

“…This cross-sectional survey included 18 villages in rural areas of Tianjin, China, and involved participants from the previously described Tianjin Brain Study (14)(15)(16), conducted between April 2014 and January 2015. In short, about 95% of the total area population (14,251 people) were low-income farmers, with 2014 per capita disposable incomes of <1,600 USD (17).…”

“…Education level, monthly income, gestational weeks, and parity were not found to have significant associations with CIMT in our study. A Chinese study, on the other hand, found that higher education is associated with decreased CIMT [ 30 ]. Whatever the education level (>primary) among our participants, a true situation of unavailable electricity in some remote villages exists; therefore, they are to use only solid fuels without other choice.…”
