Case-control study of association of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders with Helicobacter pylori infection in Japan

Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that decrease in Helicobacter pylori infection may predispose to allergic diseases. However, there are few reports of the relationships of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), especially eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE), with H. pylori infection. We investigated the possible influence of H. pylori infection on EGIDs in Japanese patients. We performed a case-control study to investigate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with EGIDs. Eighteen with eosino… Show more

“…As described above, approximately 80% of Japanese patients are not infected by Hp, in contrast to an infection rate of 50% in control cases of similar age [9] . In addition, 50% of reported patients are affected by allergic diseases including bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies [2] .…”

“…These results confirmed that EoE is a non-or less-IgE-mediated allergic disease. In addition, the rate of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection was found to be significantly lower in patients with EoE (approximately 20%) as compared to healthy age-and sex-matched controls (55%) [9] . A similar lower prevalence of Hp infection was also reported in the United States [10] .…”

“…6e8 Recently, two cross-sectional studies showed an inverse association of EGID with H. pylori. 76,77 Thus, the prevalence of H. pylori infection might explain the racial differences with regards to the location of EGID (i.e. EoE or EGE).…”

“…EoE patients as compared to healthy control subjects [96]. Further studies are needed to confirm this inverse association and to investigate the mechanisms behind the protective role Hp infection seems to play against the development of EoE.…”
