Case report of rapidly progressive proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and a proposal for aetiology in mainland China

Abstract: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a rare oral leukoplakia and has four features such as chronic proliferation, multiple occurrences, refractoriness to treatment and high rate of malignant transformation. As mentioned above, most PVL cases processed to malignancy over many years, sometimes 20 years. However, this report described a case of rapid progress, which had malignant transformation in a short period. Additionally, the aetiology of PVL was discussed and immunity was proposed as the possible ca… Show more

“…However, PVL responds poorly to various therapeutic measures, and its recurrence rate is relatively high, even after its surgical removal. 9 Verrucous hyperplasia (VH) may be associated with papillomas or be a de novo lesion. VH and PVL are irreversible clinicopathologic lesions with considerable potential for evolving into verrucous or squamous cell carcinoma.…”

“…PVL is often seen in middle-aged women2 and the female-to-male ratio is roughly 4:1. PVL is not strongly associated with alcohol or tobacco use, but the possible aetiology includes HPV, Epstein-Barr virus and immunity 2.…”
