CASE STUDY: The pig pheromone androstenone, acting as an interomone, stops dogs from barking

Abstract: Some dogs display behaviors such as excessive barking and jumping. Unwanted behaviors can often lead to animal abuse or pet relinquishment to a shelter. This study focused on the effects of androstenone on the behavior of dogs showing a barking and jumping syndrome. In the first study, barking dogs were sprayed with (a) nothing, (b) a placebo spray with sound or noise, (c) the same as (b) plus 0.1 μg/mL androstenone in isopropyl alcohol, (d) the same as (b) plus 1.0 μg/ mL androstenone in isopropyl alcohol. “…The lack of differences between ANH vs. AND1 or AND2 indicates that for leash pulling, the presence or absence of noise and different concentrations of androstenone did not change the behavior-altering effects of androstenone. The finding that androstenone reduces leash pulling is in agreement with the report that androstenone reduced barking [ 17 ].…”

“…Jumping up was defined as both front paws leaving the ground, ultimately resulting in the front paws resting on the kennel door, supporting the dog in an upright position (“up” position). This model is a variation of the barking model reported by McGlone et al [ 17 ].…”

“…The first pheromone shown to have an interomone effect was the pig sexual pheromone, androstenone (AN). When applied in spray form, AN reduced barking in dogs housed domestically (McGlone, Thompson, & Guay, 2014). The rabbit maternal-neonatal pheromone 2-methyl-2-butenal (2M2B) is secreted by rabbit dams to calm and attract pups to the nipple for efficient nursing (Coureaud, Langlois, Sicard, & Schaal, 2003;Schaal et al, 2003).…”

“…Another class of semiochemicals are the interomones. An interomone is a pheromone in one species that changes the behavior or physiology of another species without the requirements to benefit or harm, the emitter or the receiver (McGlone, 2014). Here we examined the role of the rabbit nipple-searching pheromone (2M2B; Schaal et al ., 2003), which possibly acts as a flavor or interomone in the post-weaning environment on weaned pig performance.…”
