Catalytic Conversion of Biomass to Monofunctional Hydrocarbons and Targeted Liquid-Fuel Classes

Abstract: It is imperative to develop more efficient processes for conversion of biomass to liquid fuels, such that the cost of these fuels would be competitive with the cost of fuels derived from petroleum. We report a catalytic approach for the conversion of carbohydrates to specific classes of hydrocarbons for use as liquid transportation fuels, based on the integration of several flow reactors operated in a cascade mode, where the effluent from the one reactor is simply fed to the next reactor. This approach can be … Show more

“…[77] This material showed desirable catalytic properties for ketonization of carbohydrate-derived carboxylic acids in the presence of other monofunctional oxygenated species, such as alcohols or ketones. [78] Under these conditions two different reactions take place, esterification and ketonization.…”

“…1 Among six-carboned carbohydrates, hexoses are the most abundant monosaccharides existing in nature. 2,3 Of these, fructose and glucose are suitable for the use as an economical chemical feedstock for producing heterocyclic furan chemicals such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), 4 furfuryl alcohol (FFA), 5 2,5-diformylfuran (2,5-DFF) 6 and 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF).…”
