Furfural comes from lignocellulosic biomass that, together with its derived products, has many useful applications in several industries. Furfural is usually obtained via pentose dehydration using a biphasic reactor to extract furfural in situ from its reaction medium. However, the conventional solvents used so far, mainly toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), are harmful to health and the environment. Therefore, hydrophobic natural solvents have been successfully tested in this work to improve the performance of the process from a sustainable point of view. First, 30 natural solvents were screened using the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) method to select solvents with high affinity to furfural. From the results obtained in the screening, 14 natural and 2 conventional solvents were selected for experimentation, including thymol, eugenol, toluene, MIBK, and several hydrophobic eutectic solvents formed by thymol. Then, the liquid–liquid extraction of furfural was carried out both in vials and in a reactor, simulating the usual temperature and pH conditions for obtaining furfural. Thymol and eugenol showed extraction yields of 95 and 91%, significantly higher than those of conventional solvents MIBK and toluene, which were 85 and 81%, respectively. Finally, the in situ reaction and extraction of furfural from xylose were performed using the natural solvents eugenol and thymol and the conventional solvent MIBK. Under operating conditions, namely, microwave heating to 443.2 K, 10 min of reaction, and a solvent-to-feed ratio of 1.00, xylose conversion of 96.7%, furfural selectivity of 75.3%, and a furfural production yield of 72.8% from xylose were obtained using eugenol as the organic solvent, with improved outcomes over MIBK and thymol cases, pointing an adequate approach to improve both the effectiveness and the sustainability of the process.

Summary 5‐Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile biomass‐derived chemical from multifunctional compound. It is also a promising intermediate compound used in various chemical and fuel applications, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, biofuel, and other intermediates. The demand for innovative approaches to renewable energy resources has risen to diminish the dependency on petroleum‐based products and to seek economical and environmentally friendly processes for supplying energy to the world. Fructose, glucose, cellulose, and lignocellulosic materials are the most common feedstocks used to synthesize HMF. This study reviews previous studies on the development of high yield and selectivity of HMF from technical and economic perspectives. The article highlights a few significant parameters and focused on the solvent system used for the synthesis of HMF in the lab scale and through the development of process modeling using simulation software such as Aspen Plus to perform the techno‐economic analysis (TEA), which analyses the economic feasibility of the developed production process. The TEA can estimate the capital investment needed, including feedstock, catalyst, and equipment cost, and the final product's minimum selling price (MSP). HMF is cost‐efficient due to higher operational costs from the higher cost of fructose feedstock. By studying this analysis, the overall cost of HMF production can be minimized and more economically competitive with current commercial production. Besides, to make the production of HMF more cost‐effective, more research into alternative lignocellulosic feedstocks and the development of novel catalytic systems is needed.

The wide use of Li-ion batteries in energy storage has resulted in a new waste product stream rich in valuable metals Mn, Ni, and Co with well-known catalytic activities. In this work, a spent Li-ion battery electrode material with lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide is shown as an excellent reusable catalyst for oxidation of biomass-derived furan aldehydes and alcohols to their value-added oxidation products with applications in the sustainable polymer industry. A mechanically separated, combined cathode and anode black material from a spent DELL 1525 laptop battery was pyrolyzed in air at 600 °C to remove binders and electrolytes to prepare the catalyst. The SEM, XRF, and X-ray crystallography analysis of the catalyst showed the presence of C, O, Li, Ni, Co, and Mn, indicating the presence of a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 )-type cathode material in the spent Li-ion battery employed in the study. This material was shown as an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of aldehyde and alcohol functional groups in biofurans, furan-2-aldehyde, 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, and 5,5′-[oxybis(methylene)]bis[2-furaldehyde], to their corresponding carboxylic acids in 82−97% yield, at 120−140 °C, under 1.24 MPa oxygen, and in 0.10 M aq. Na 2 CO 3 medium.
