Recreational fishing takes place worldwide in both developed and developing countries, amounting to ~220 to ~700 million recreational anglers worldwide (World Bank, 2012). Consequently, the fisheries management agencies have implemented various regulation measures for the sustainable management of recreational fisheries (Benoît et al., 2015;Hühn & Arlinghaus, 2011;Lewin et al., 2021;Weltersbach et al., 2018). The most typical fishing regulations are size limits (legal minimum lengths) and daily bag limits (harvest limits per angler per day), and hence anglers are ethically and legally obligated to immediately release substantial parts of their catch following fishing regulations
