The population dynamics of jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas from northwest Mexico was evaluated for the period 1974-2012 using Schaefer's model, where model parameters were estimated with the catch maximum sustainable yield method (Catch-MSY) using two prior intrinsic population increase rate (r) range values (1.0 to 2.0 and 1.5 to 2.0). Estimated parameters with both prior r ranges were 1.23 and 1.68 yr-1 for r and 243,836 and 190,468 ton for carrying capacity (k), respectively. Corresponding management quantities were 75,147 and 80,098 ton for the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and 121,918 and 95,234 ton for the biomass at MSY (BMSY). Estimated jumbo squid biomass dropped below the BMSY after 2003, and near to 0.2 k in 2012. The Schaefer's model showed that declines in estimated biomass were preceded by catches that exceeded the MSY. Strong El Niño-Southern Oscillation events can change the availability of jumbo squid in northwest Mexico through migratory processes and phenotype changes in maturation size, but stock biomass variability is most likely to be caused by fishing.

The crab fishery of the genus Callinectes is one of the most important fisheries in Mexico. Sonora and Sinaloa are the states on the eastern coast of the Gulf of California, the mainland coast. Sinaloa encompasses the greatest production in Mexico of these species, in particular the Bahía Santa Maria La Reforma (BSMR), supplying the most important catches. A mandatory administrative document for the fishery is the Management Plan of Crab. One of the main weaknesses found in it for Sonora and Sinaloa is the lack of fishery assessment in both states. For this reason, a size-structured method called CASA (Catch-at-Size Analysis) was applied in the BSMR, in the seasons 2000, 2011, and 2014, to C. bellicosus. The first catch size (CW50%) estimated for females was 97.5, 102.5, and 100 mm, while in males, it was estimated at 117.5, 107.5, and 102.5 mm. In the specific case of fishing mortality (F), the algorithm allowed us to find that in the larger sizes, a greater fishing pressure is applied for both females and males, yielding a weighted exploitation rate of 0.047 (2000), 0.119 (2011), and 0.426 (2014) for females and 0.045 (2000), 0.295 (2011), and 0.132 (2014) for males, all below 50% (E = 0.50). The crab C. bellicosus in BSMR is not at risk of overexploitation.

En el sureste del golfo de California, en el estado de Sinaloa, la pesquería de las jaibas Callinectes arcuatus y C. bellicosus es la segunda más importante para los pescadores ribereños, después de la pesquería del camarón. Su captura se realiza durante casi todo el año, solo se suspende en los meses de su veda y al inicio de la temporada de pesca del camarón. La pesquería se realiza en diferentes zonas del estado y representa una gran fuente de ingreso en el sector de pesca ribereña, por ello la estimación de parámetros como la biomasa en el máximo rendimiento sostenible (BMRS) y el máximo rendimiento sostenible (MRS) son fundamentales para su manejo sustentable. En la presente investigación se utilizó la serie de captura oficial de 1993-2012 para 7 zonas de Sinaloa, México, con la finalidad de detectar posibles problemas de sobre-explotación del recurso. Los valores de tasa de incremento poblacional (r) calculados por el método de captura-MRS variaron entre 0,89 y 1,4, con una capacidad de carga (k) entre 390 y 14.814 t y un MRS de 131 a 3.302 t para las diversas zonas analizadas, mientras que en el análisis para todo el estado se estimó una r de 0,97, k de 32.550 t y un MRS de 7.895 t. En dos de las 7 zonas y en la evaluación global, la biomasa estimada se calculó por debajo de la BMRS, por lo que se recomienda la reducción de la captura por debajo del límite inferior calculado al 95%, con el objetivo de que el stock pueda regenerarse.
