Cathepsin D as an Indicator of Clinical Outcome in Early Breast Carcinoma During the First 3 Years of Follow-Up

Abstract: Determination of cathepsin D status in breast cancer might identify patients at different risk for relapse and might facilitate the selection of more or less aggressive adjuvant therapy for early breast cancer patients during the first 3 years of follow-up.

“…Cathepsin D protein has been reported to be overexpressed in breast cancer and hyper-secreted by epithelial breast cancer cells ( 21 , 32 , 33 ). Other previous studies have suggested that cathepsin D expression may be an independent predictor for poor prognosis of breast cancer patients as cathepsin D expression was associated with a high incidence of cancer metastasis ( 20 , 34 ). Consistent with these previous findings, the current study also demonstrated that high expression of cathepsin D protein was associated with poor prognosis of breast cancer patients; however, multivariate analysis failed to indicate that this was an independent predictor of disease-free survival.…”

“…Among the patients with positive lymph nodes, those with tumor cells immunopositive for CTSD had a higher risk of relapse [ 21 ]. Determination of CTSD status in breast cancer patients might help identify those with different risk levels of relapse [ 22 ]. Our previous work suggests that CTSB and CTSD are associated with NPC metastasis [ 13 ].…”

“…Such patients are increasingly difficult to find due to a trend of widening systemic therapy use [16]. The patient group was assembled from a period of over 20 years ago when low metastasis risk patients have not been prescribed systemic therapy at our institution.…”

“…Our data indicate that high FD associates with high distant metastasis risk. With FD regarded as a formal means of quantifying shape complexity [11,16], it can be considered that high structural complexity of H&E stained tumour tissue associates with high risk. This result is consistent with the previously reported prognostic value of FD obtained on pan-cytokeratin stained breast tumour tissue sections [14].…”
