Cause, Classification of Voltage Sag, and Voltage Sag Emulators and Applications: A Comprehensive Overview

Abstract: The large-scale application of wind power and photovoltaic power solves the energy crisis and alleviates the environmental problems caused by the use of conventional energy. However, they are at risk of being randomly tripped from the network when faced to voltage sag and severe fault events, which will lead to a sudden reduction of active power output and also complicates fault recovery process of the whole system. Moreover, it may also aggravate failures and lead to large-scale power outages, which stimulate… Show more

“…Once a sag in the RMS value of the grid voltage is detected, efficient current reference generation strategies are formulated based on the grid codes [73]. The use of current control strategy helps in limiting the magnitude of the injected currents, mitigating the double grid frequency oscillations within the injected power, providing voltage support at the PCC and ensuring that the injected currents are of low total harmonic distortion (THD) [74] - [76].…”

“…High power quality produces an impeccable power supply that has no noise, sinusoidal waveform, is always available, and within voltage and frequency tolerances. Voltage sags/swells/interruptions are the most important power quality issues which are classified as short-duration voltage variations [5]. As per the standard IEEE 1159 [6], voltage sag is a fall in the Root Mean Square (RMS) voltage (0.1-0.9 of nominal voltage) the duration of which is 0.5 -1 .…”
