Cause-specific mortality in Africa and Asia: evidence from INDEPTH health and demographic surveillance system sites

Abstract: BackgroundBecause most deaths in Africa and Asia are not well documented, estimates of mortality are often made using scanty data. The INDEPTH Network works to alleviate this problem by collating detailed individual data from defined Health and Demographic Surveillance sites. By registering all deaths over time and carrying out verbal autopsies to determine cause of death across many such sites, using standardised methods, the Network seeks to generate population-based mortality statistics that are not otherwi… Show more

“…The overall public-domain INDEPTH dataset (10) from which these malaria-specific analyses are drawn is described in detail elsewhere (11), with full details of methods used, which are also summarised here in Box 1. Briefly, the dataset documents 111,910 deaths in 12,204,043 person-years of observation across 22 sites, all processed in a standardised manner.…”

“…Members of the INDEPTH network of demographic surveillance systems have been collecting verbal autopsy data in some sites for many years 153 . In the development of the GBD cause of death database, we have been able to make only limited use of INDEPTH verbal autopsy data collected in multiple sites.…”

“…In brief, the InterVA-4 model is a computer based logarithm which uses Bayes’ theorem in an attempt to overcome limitations of alternative methods [1720], such as physician coding. InterVA-4 ascertains probable cause(s) of death for each VA case based on expert algorithms and relevant available medical data [21]. The causes of death generated by the InterVA-4 are compatible with the International Classification of Diseases version 10 (ICD-10) and are categorized into 62 groups, as defined in the 2012 WHO VA instrument [16].…”
