CD105 expression as a measure of microvessel density in supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the expression of CD105 among patients with supraglottic laryngeal cancer and to assess the clinical relevance of CD105-assessed MVD. A total of 40 patients with supraglottic squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) were included in the present study. Surgical specimens were immunostained for CD105 and MVD was calculated at 400x magnification. The rounded mean value of the vessel count in four fields for each case was used as the final MVD value. The mean MVD value assess… Show more

“…Bodnar et al reported higher MVD values in a group of patients with laryngeal cancers [23]. Zvrko et al reported results similar to our findings among patients with glottis and epiglottis cancers [24, 25]. However, Martone et al, Shimming et al, and Chien et al reported lower MVD values [14, 17, 26].…”

“…Since SCCs arising from different regions of the larynx differ in their typical clinical behaviour, the research group at the Montenegro Clinical Centre in Podgorica recently investigated CD105 expression specifically in supraglottic (47) and glottic (48) SCCs. In the supraglottic series (47), CD105‐assessed MVD was determined in 40 samples drawn from completely resected tumours: statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between a high CD105‐assessed MVD and pN+ category, advanced stage (III and IV) and loco‐regional recurrence; a high CD105‐assessed MVD was the only independent marker of recurrent disease.…”

“…The relationship between CD105 expression, clinicopathological and prognostic features exclusively in laryngeal SCC has been investigated preliminarily by our group 19,20 and also by Zvrko et al. 21 Both angiogenin and CD105 expression seem to be induced by hypoxia within malignancies 18,22 …”
