CD44 variant 6 is associated with prostate cancer metastasis and chemo‐/radioresistance

Abstract: Our findings demonstrate that CD44v6 is an important cancer stem cell-like marker associated with CaP proliferation, invasion, adhesion, metastasis, chemo-/radioresistance, and the induction of EMT as well as the activation PI3K/Akt/mTOR and Wnt signaling pathways, suggesting that CD44v6 is a novel therapeutic target to sensitize CaP cells to chemo/radiotherapy.

“…Furthermore, irradiated aMSCs retained their phenotype over time after IR, which was mainly evident by the constant expression of surface antigens Sca1, CD29, CD44 and CD105; which are cell surface antigens that have been linked with the resistance to IR in previous studies [92][93][94].…”

“…Variant 6 isoform of CD44 is a cancer stem cell-like marker in prostate cancer, associated with proliferation, invasiveness, metastasis and chemo-/ radioresistance. These effects are mediated through PI3K activation and the Wnt signalling pathway 142 . Variant isoforms of CD44 are also relevant to the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma 143 .…”

“…Besides the outlined conditions (Table 1), it has to be taken into consideration some PCa cell radioresistance biomarkers, among which particularly EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition with down-expression of E-cadherin compared with mesenchyme-peculiar expression of vimentin) and CD44-variant 6 marker, whose small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated knock-down can suppress, by deactivation of PI3K-Akt/mTOR and Wnt/βcatenin signaling pathways, the PCa cells growth, © C I C E d i z i o n i I n t e r n a z i o n a l i so increasing their radio-and chemosensitivity (11,12).…”
