CD45RA and CD45RO isoforms in infected malnourished and infected well-nourished children

Abstract: SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to determine if the distribution in vivo of CD4 1 CD45RA 1 /CD45RO 2 (naive), CD4 1 CD45RA 1 /CD45RO 1 (Ddull) and CD4 1 CD45RO 1 (memory) lymphocytes differs in malnourished infected and well-nourished infected children. The expression of CD45RA (naive) and CD45RO (memory) antigens on CD4 1 lymphocytes was analysed by flow cytometry in a prospectively followed cohort of 15 malnourished infected, 12 well-nourished infected and 10 well-nourished uninfected children. Malnourished… Show more

“…In our laboratory, it has been demonstrated that malnourished children show a lower proportion of memory cells (CD45RO ϩ ) than well-nourished children (27). A previous study showed that the reduced proportion of IL-2-producing cells is predominantly associated with a decreased proportion of IL-2-producing CD45RO ϩ cells (4).…”

“…Malnourished infected children from developing countries have shown higher fractions of Ddull lymphocytes and lower fractions of memory lymphocytes than well-nourished infected children. Impairment of the transformation of the Ddull cells in memory cells in malnourished children may explain these findings and may be one of the mechanisms involved in immunodeficiency in these children (17). Whether or not this immunological condition promotes the establishment of carrier states and the wide spectrum of Campylobacter species isolated among malnourished children deserves further studies.…”

“…CD3 + CD4 + CD45RA -CD45RO + T cell counts varied over time from a significant reduction during the first week of follow up to elevated numbers in survivors during the last two weeks of the study (Figures 2a,c). The analysis of effector subsets, characterised by being double positive (CD45RA + CD45RO + ) (Hermiston et al 2003;Najera et al 2001), showed that were significantly reduced in both CD4 + and CD8 + T lymphocyte subsets at baseline, 3 and 7 days in both groups of patients compared with controls and in survivors compared with nonsurvivors at 3 days. From day 7 of follow up onwards, these values normalised in the surviving patients (Figures 2b,e).…”
