CD56 Positive Intestinal T-Cell Lymphoma: Treatment with High Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation.

Abstract: A 63-year-old man presented with a perforation of the small intestine. A diagnosis of intestinal T-cell lymphoma (ITCL) was made from CD (cluster differentiation) 3 positivity and a rearrangement of T-cell receptor genes. The tumor also expressed CD56,which suggests it belongs to a rare subtype derived from activated cytotoxic intraepithelial T lymphocytes. Although the prognosis of ITCL has been considered to be very poor irrespective of CD56positivity, complete remission was achieved in this case by high dos… Show more

“…The outcome of patients treated with high-dose chemotherapy and ASCT reported previously varies from no response to remissions lasting longer than 32 months. [15][16][17]19,20 In some cases the ASCT was performed in first remission 15 and in some in second and subsequent remissions, 16,17 or the remission status was not specified. 20 Therefore, it is difficult to make any valid conclusions.…”

“…4 Treatment options have historically included surgical resection with or without anthracycline-based chemotherapy, 9,14 or less commonly high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). [15][16][17] Results of treatment with surgery or conventional chemotherapy are poor. 9 Results with the use of high-dose chemotherapy with ASCT are available only as case reports, 16,17 or small series of patients.…”

“…There have been few case studies of EATL patients treated with chemotherapy and upfront ASCT (6)(7)(8)(9). Two cases were reported in Japan (10,11). Encouraging results were reported by Bishton and Haynes who described the treatment of six patients with ASCT after receiving ifosfamide, etoposide, and epirubicin, followed by two cycles of high-dose methotrexate and carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, and melphalan (BEAM).…”
