Ce-Doped YAG Nanophosphor and Red Emitting CuInS2/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for Warm White Light-Emitting Diode with High Color Rendering Index

Abstract: In this work, we report the solvothermal synthesis of Ce-doped YAG (YAG:Ce) nanoparticles (NPs) and their association with a free-Cd CuInS2/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) core/shell QDs for application into white light emitting diode (WLED). 1500 °C-annealed YAG:Ce NPs and CIS/ZnS core/shell QDs exhibited intense yellow and red emissions band with maxima at 545 and 667 nm, respectively. Both YAG:Ce nanophosphor and CIS/ZnS QDs showed high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of about 50% upon 460 nm excitation. YAG:Ce nanop… Show more

“…Later, the group had utilized red Cu: CdS QDs and yellow phosphors as light convertors in WLED and obtained high quality white light with CRI (Ra) and luminous efficiency reaching up to 86 and 40 lm/W at 20 mA, respectively [9]. Meanwhile, Aboulaich et al had also realized WLED with CRI (Ra) of 84 and luminous efficiency of 30.6 lm/W at 20 mA by employing YAG:Ce phosphors and red CuInS 2 QDs as light convertors [10]. Moreover, Sohn et al [11] and Kim et al [12,13] had utilized bilayer structured QD-based light converting films to realize WLED with CRI (Ra) larger than 80 and luminous efficiency below 75 lm/W at 20 mA.…”

“…For the goal of widening the color range of white LEDs, some researchers proposed to add a red-emitting phosphor layer to the surface of the yellow-green emitting phosphor layer. 5,6 For the YAG: Ce 3þ phosphor, it does not work well, because resin silicones have to be used, and then it loses the initial idea of resin-free package. The other solution is that the emission of the YAG:Ce 3þ phosphor may be tailored by the additional co-doping elements, such as Cr 3þ , Pr 3þ , Eu 3þ , Sm 3þ , and Mn 3þ .…”

“…1,2 QDs are widely applied as light emitting diodes, [3][4][5] bioprobes in sensing, 6,7 imaging, [8][9][10] and other emitting materials. [11][12][13] In most applications, such as light emitting diodes and photoelectric biosensors, QDs are ultimately required to be stably immobilized on substrates such as films, which can effectively eliminate the issue of colloid diffusion.…”
