Cell Identifier Assignment in Two-Tier Femtocell Networks

Abstract: Small cells, mainly femtocells, are believed to be a way how to deal with mobile data traffic growth in the upcoming years. To enable easy and massive femtocell deployments, a distributed method of Physical Cell Identifier (PCI) assignment should be implemented in Femtocell Access Points among other self-organizing functionalities. In this paper, we propose such a distributed algorithm enabling correct PCI assignment in a collision-free manner and resolving all confusion events based on neighbouring cells' PCI… Show more

“…There are a number of research works which propose heuristic algorithms for PCI assignment. The algorithm proposed in [10], is decentralized and depends on BSs exchanging neighbor relation tables as opposed to the algorithm in [11], which is centralized and makes use of messages from UEs to build the neighbor relation tables and PCI assignment. In [12], a dynamic PCI assignment algorithm is proposed.…”

“…Many novel algorithms are proposed to assign limited physical cell identities (PCIs) (specified 504 in 4G) efficiently. Some passive methods are presented in [3,4] to detect PCI conflicts and confusions via cell measurements. Nevertheless, some proactive algorithms to assign PCI before error detections are proposed in [5,6].…”
