Cell Migration and the Alimentary System: Endocrine Contributions of the Neural Crest to the Gut and its Derivatives

Abstract: Evidence has been presented to show that, in all probability, the endocrine polypeptide (APUD) cells of Duodenumthe gut and its derivatives, especially the pancreas, are de rived from the neural crest. Setting aside, for the present, the truth or otherwise of this hypothesis, attempts have been made to estimate the mass of portions of the endocrine gut. It has been calculated that the volume of the endocrine stomach alone is greater than that of the pituitary gland. The consequences which arise from the concep… Show more

“…After the initial hypothesis of the origin of GEP endocrine cells from the neural crest [22,23], chimeric models have shown a common embryologic origin of gut endocrine epithelial cells from the endoderm layer [1,17]. In this context, CDX2 expression in both normal endocrine and exocrine intestinal cells and related neoplasms lends additional support to the hypothesis of the endodermal origin of both these cell types, considering also that the expression of this transcription factor is restricted to endoderm-derived tissues.…”

“…In the rat it has been proposed that the endocrine cells of the dorsal pancreas are of neural crest origin [Pearse, 1973]. Recent experimental studies of the developing avian pancreas, however, in dicate that the pancreatic APUD cells of the chick embryo are not derived from the neural crest [Andrew, 1976].…”
