Cell secretomes for wound healing and tissue regeneration: Next generation acellular based tissue engineered products

Abstract: Wound represents a significant socioeconomic burden for both affected individuals and as a whole healthcare system. Accordingly, stem cells have garnered attention due to their differentiation capacity and ability to aid tissue regeneration by releasing biologically active molecules, found in the cells’ cultivated medium which known as conditioned medium (CM) or secretomes. This acellular approach provides a huge advantage over conventional treatment options, which are mainly used cellular treatment at wound c… Show more

“…Another line of research to successfully achieve this goal is the usage of conditioned media. In particular, conditioned media derived from cultured mesenchymal stem cells contain various secreted cytokines, growth factors, extracellular matrix proteins, and miscellaneous factors involved in cellular proliferation and tissue regeneration [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. In addition, these media can be used in cell-free therapy as an alternative to cell-based therapy, as the utilization can lower risks of immune rejection and reduce the possibility of allogenic administration and are relatively more feasible for commercial mass production.…”

“…Therein, many landmarks and pioneer preparations based on autologous or allogeneic skin cells have been marketed under an array of FDA procedures (e.g., 510(k), PMA, orphan drug, etc.) [ 20 , 21 ]. While some tissue-engineered skin substitutes yielding living cells have been commercially discontinued for a number of reasons, some are still marketed to this day.…”

“…Wound healing is a complex and dynamic biological process coordinated by different cellular events and instructions from the microenvironment. Interestingly, the use of cell-secreted proteins, known as secretomes, has potential in accelerating wound healing [ 57 ]. Normally, the instructions exist in the form of chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors, which together organize the phases of healing.…”
