“…It seems safe to say, however, in view of the identity of the P/O ratio found in R. cancrivora and in R. temporaria, that the neurohypophysis of R. cancrivora probably has peptides which are similar at least to those of the non-eturyhaline R. temporaria. If the assumption is made that the main hormone is 8-arginine vasotocin then, using the range of potencies quoted by Schwartz & Livingston (1964), it can be calculated that one pituitary of R. cancrivora has an oxytocic activity equivalent to from 0-01 to 0-07 Fug vasotocin, and a pressor activity equivalent to from 0-05 to 0-2 ,g vasotocin. Such calculations can however be tentative only.…”

“…These analogues include I ,6-djenkolic acid oxytocin and I ,6-djenkolic acid-lysine vasopressin which have a methylene group interposed between the sulphur atoms in the disulphide bridge. The peptides activity is, however, much reduced and Schwartz & Livingston (1964) have suggested that the -S-Sgroup may be essential for maintaining the shape of the molecule and also may affect the hormone-receptor affinity. It may, for instance, facilitate the entry of the hormone into the cell.…”
