Village planning has assigned a single fixed boundary to the village to protect the external spatial form type of the village from destruction. To meet its development needs, the village needs to change the fixed boundary. How to delineate a boundary that does not destroy the external spatial form type of the village but also meets the development needs of the village has become an urgent problem to be solved. This paper proposes a strategy to delineate flexible boundaries for villages. This strategy accomplishes the delineation of flexible boundaries without destroying the spatial form type of the village by adjusting the control parameters to meet the needs of village development for boundaries. Firstly, the strategy calculates the value of the optimal village boundary corresponding to the control parameter, then constructs the mathematical and theoretical relationship between the village's external spatial form type and the optimal boundary corresponding to the parameter, and finally determines the range of spatial form type corresponding to the control parameter and selects 20 traditional villages in China as empirical evidence. The results show that: the length of control parameters corresponding to the external spatial form types of villages shows the law of segmental distribution; the higher the degree of banding of the external spatial form of villages, the greater the length of control parameters; the range of control parameters for clustered boundary delineation of the village, and the banding tendency of the clustered and banding spatial form types is 15-30, 30-50, and 50-130. The results can provide theoretical references for the planning and design of villages, as well as provide decision-making help for the village participants.

The Influence of Spatial Functions on the Public Space System of Traditional Settlements

Public spaces are important places for various social functions and are also essential components of the cultural heritage of traditional settlements, which are suffering from blind function renewal and structural reconstruction during urbanization. It is essential to clarify the influence of spatial functions on spatial systems for the sustainable development of traditional settlements. Thus, based on the topology theory, we built a research framework for the relationship between public space functions and systems. Through field research, Pajek topological network analysis, and space syntax, we investigated the influence of spatial functions on the public space system of traditional settlements in terms of both structure and order. The research results of Zhang Guying Village demonstrate that (1) the public space of Zhang Guying Village has the structural characteristics of “axis-oriented and multi-core”; (2) the coordinated development of political, living, and traffic public spaces constitutes the formation logic of the public space system; (3) topological analysis of public spaces based on spatial functions helps in the optimization and functional reorganization of the public space system in traditional settlements. Hence, this study can provide understanding of the formation of the public space system and can also provide local administration adaptive reconfiguration strategies for the sustainable development of traditional settlements in the future.

In the context of global urbanization, traditional villages have garnered increasing scholarly interest due to their role in preserving rich ethnic cultures and their potential contributions to cultural heritage. Existing literature has predominantly attributed the spatial heterogeneity of traditional villages to natural, environmental, and economic factors. However, cultural elements, which are equally crucial to the inheritance and continuation of traditional villages, are rather deficient in current research. By establishing a tripartite framework encompassing “natural environment—space economy—social culture” elements, this article first employs relevant geographic spatial analysis to examine the overall distribution patterns of Chinese traditional villages. Subsequently, it utilizes the Optimal Parameter-based GeoDetector model to assess the maximum impact of single factors and interactions among factors on the spatial heterogeneity of Chinese traditional villages. The paper then integrates spatial production theory to reveal the mechanisms underlying the interactions among these tripartite elements. The research findings indicate that cultural factors exert the most substantial influence on the spatial distribution of traditional Chinese villages, in contrast to previous research records that suggested natural elements had the greatest impact. Additionally, population and genealogy emerge as the two most critical factors, with their interaction having the most significant effect on the spatial pattern of Chinese traditional villages (q = 0.82663). Finally, we put forward regional-level recommendations for the preservation of traditional villages. Overall, our work can not only provide valuable insights for global research on traditional villages in developing countries based on traditional agriculture but also offer recommendations for the preservation of traditional villages in China.
