Cementoplasty for painful bone metastases: a series of 42 cases

Abstract: The aim of this study is to assess the interest of cementoplasty in the management of bone metastases, based on a retrospective study involving 42 cementoplasty procedures. The median age of the patients is 59 years, with 24 women (57%) and 18 men, all of them presenting with an advanced disease. The cementoplasty was situated in long bones (ten patients), dorsal or lumbar vertebrae (13) and flat bones (20). The principal indication was pain, sometimes with consolidation. “…[ 54 ] have conducted a study on a large group of patients with metastatic lung cancer to spinal, the majority of treated lesions with VP method were located in the thoracic with 134 lesions or lumbar with 119 lesion areas and their results showed a pain intensity reduction of at least 50%, as well as Botton et al. [ 55 ] conducted a similar research on 42 patients and they also defined treatment efficacy as good (57%, 24/42). Furthermore, Qian et al.…”

“…Bipolar hemiarthroplasty is the main surgical treatment for femoral neck metastasis, but it is associated with the risk of major surgical complications, especially in patients with stage-IV cancer 15 . In recent years, percutaneous cementoplasty has been widely used to treat multiple bone metastases in flat bones as well as long bones and has achieved substantial pain reduction postoperatively 16 , 17 . Cementoplasty can be performed in combination with screw or nail insertion for the prevention of perioperative bone bleeding, the suppression of local tumor spreading, and the achievement of immediate mechanical stability 18 , 19 .…”
