Central skull base lymphoma in children: MR and CT features

Abstract: Lymphoma involving the central skull base in children is visualized as an isointense mass on T2-weighted MRI with marked contrast enhancement and adjacent dural thickening, and as a highly attenuating mass on noncontrast CT with permeative or erosive bone destruction patterns.

“…The described etiologies for CS tumors have included infectious disease, Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS), aneurysm, thrombosis, and neoplasms [12]. Although neoplasms originating from the CS are rare in children, several case reports concerning malignant lymphoma in the CS have been published [13, 14]. In the present case, MRA ruled out vascular lesions.…”

“…CT images of sinonasal lymphoma show high attenuation with permeative bone destruction without calcification, chondroid or osteoid matrix formation, haemorrhage and necrosis 11 12. On the other hand, there have been few reports about imaging features of sphenoid lymphomas.…”

“…44 Imaging is useful in these cases to help differentiate lymphoma from sarcoma or carcinoma with findings of homogeneous tumor that are isointense to brain on T2 MRI images and highly attenuating with smooth borders on CT being typical. 45 For most cases of lymphoma that involve the temporal bone, there is also disease involvement at another site within the head and neck-often a site more easily approached for a biopsy. As with most lymphomas in the head and neck, surgery is limited to tissue biopsy to establish a diagnosis and to prompt primary chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.…”
