Centrality of Religiosity, Attitude towards Christianity and Post-Critical Belief: Comparing Three Measures of Religiosity

Abstract: The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), the Francis Scale of Attitude towards Christianity (FAC) and the Post-Critical Belief Scale (PCB) are three prominent measures of religiosity. Comparing the three measures on theoretical grounds, one may assume that high religiosity (CRS) is linked to both a strong attitude towards Christianity (FAC) and to orthodoxy (PCB), while no religiosity (CRS) may be associated with both a low expressed attitude towards Christianity (FAC) and external critique (PCB). “…Future research should collect participants from each of the affiliations of interest to test for potential ingroup and outgroup effects. Additionally, we used religiosity as one construct, but some research (e.g., Riegel, 2020) suggests other measures that examine more nuanced dimensions of religiosity, including whether religiosity is more intrinsically or extrinsically focused. It would be important to examine the effect of these other dimensions of religiosity in future research on this topic.…”

“…Religiosity: Muslim adolescents' religiosity has been assessed by the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS; S. Huber & O. Huber, 2012). It has been chosen because it measures religiosity, even in its five-item short form, as well as more comprehensive alternative instruments do (Riegel, 2020), and is available in a version for Muslim respondents.…”

“…We recommend using the short versions (CRS-5 and CRSi-7) in future investigations if the main goal of the study is not religiosity itself but where religiosity is included as a variable of interest (e.g., Lee and Kuang 2020;Riegel 2020). However, if the primary goal of the study is the investigation of the structure of religiosity, we encourage the use of the long versions (CRS-15 and CRSi-20; e.g., Perveen and Malik 2020;Ro żnowski and Zarzycka 2020;Zarzycka et al 2020).…”
