Cerebellar Balloon-Cell Metastasis of a Melanoma

Abstract: The authors describe a cerebellar balloon-cell metastasis of a cutaneous melanoma. The authors explain this phenomenon according to the theory of cellular differentiation of the component vertical-growth phase of Clark.

“…10,24 Additional research instead suggests that melanocytic ballooning occurs because of melanosome enlargement and subsequent demelanization. 24,59 The further fusion of these transformed melanosomes is thought to create the classic vacuolated appearance of balloon cells. 60 Ferracini et al hypothesized that the vertical growth pattern of melanomas results in two distinct cell populationspigmented melanocytes and nonpigmented balloon cellswhich are commonly observed in histopathological preparations of BCM.…”

“…60 Ferracini et al hypothesized that the vertical growth pattern of melanomas results in two distinct cell populationspigmented melanocytes and nonpigmented balloon cellswhich are commonly observed in histopathological preparations of BCM. 59 Vertical growth phases of melanocytes are more frequently associated with metastatic transformation, which may explain the increased observation of balloon cell populations in metastatic melanomas. 59 Indeed, we observed a predominance of balloon cell infiltration in 100% of reported BCM metastases, with metastatic lesions often entirely replaced by balloon cell transformation.…”
