CFD Analysis and Optimization of a Diesel Engine Cooling Water Jacket

Abstract: The STAR-CCM + software is used to investigate the flow inside a cooling water jacket of an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine. The results show that the average flow velocity of the cooling water inside the jacket is 1.669 m/s while the flow velocity distribution is not uniform for each cylinder. Moreover, the fluid velocity in proximity to the cylinder head is too low, thereby affecting the cooling performances of the water jacket. Two corresponding structural optimization schemes are proposed to mitigate th… Show more

“…Salah satu peran penting dari adanya cooling water pada internal combustion engine adalah dapat menjaga suhu pada setiap silinder dan cooling water [32]. Namun, karena ditemukan adanya kebocoran pada jalur cooling water pada data PAP, maka laju korosi dari komponen engine menjadi meningkat lebih cepat.…”

“…Naderi et al 27 proposed presenting a smart speed-load sensitive cooling map for better engine thermal management and results showed using the cooling map leads to a significant reduction in coolant flow, which in turn reduces the power consumption of the water pump and size of the radiator. Qin et al 28 investigated the flow inside a cooling water jacket of an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine and gave two structural optimization schemes for improving the velocity uniformity of each cylinder. Bi et al, [29][30] found that the uneven distributions of coolant flow in cooling water jackets of different liner can significantly affect the cylinder liner deformation and highlighted the importance of coolant flow uniformity.…”
