Low-carbon building retrofit will contribute to delivering China's policy to reduce carbon emissions. This paper proposes viable low-carbon adaptation strategies for a recurrent building type within the Hot Summer and Cold Winter (HSCW) zone. An existing 23-storey tower in Hangzhou is investigated within the context of a representative city environment. Indoor air temperatures and energy consumption were monitored across a typical floor and simulated in EnergyPlus. Outdoor and indoor airflow patterns were modelled in an advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool, FLUIDITY. Across a typical floor, observations and modelling show marked variations. Southfacing flats overheat significantly in summer largely due to solar radiation. External sun-shading structures are proposed and evaluated to counter summer overheating. An innovative wind catcher and exhaust-stack natural ventilation system is proposed to enhance indoor thermal comfort using natural ventilation. Modelling of this integrated ventilation system indicates that the proposed retrofit system will improve indoor thermal comfort even in the lower floors. The proposed building retrofit strategy is costed using locally established construction cost estimates. Predicted energy savings suggest that the adaptation strategy proposed is potentially viable with significant implications for policy-makers, developers, constructors and designers in this challenging climate zone in China.

Wind ventilation is an efficient design strategy for the natural cooling system (NCS) in humid climates. The building forms can generate different pressures and temperatures to induce natural ventilation. This study has been carried out in Rasht city, Iran in 2017. The method was performed using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach simulation to study variance between the proposed and the actual results of a design. The goal of the study is to assist architects to design optimum building form for natural ventilation. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the form on natural ventilation. On this basis, wind flow simulation was performed using Design Builder Version 4.5. In this paper, the present usage of natural ventilation of rural residential buildings in Rasht area the application of this methodology. Initially, wind simulation was carried out based on actual building specifications. Then the proposed L-shaped extension was added to the building. The results showed that if the rectangular form is turned into an L shape, it can offer a better flow pattern for wind in all rooms, but the speed will be reduced.

Longitudinal ventilation systems are commonly installed in new tunnels. In this paper, based on the similarity law, the scale model with a view to different conditions is carried out to study the effectiveness of twin-tunnel complementary ventilation system. The system can offer enough amount of fresh air to meet requirement of driving safety by using longitudinal ventilation without ventilation shaft. Field measurements were also performed to validate the numerical model. Results reveal that particle concentration distribution is influenced by the distance from air interchange cross-passages to uphill tunnel inlet (Lex) and the flow volume of air interchange cross (Qex) passage and jet fan thrust (Pjet) in tunnel. And Lex is the most important factor about influencing the ventilation efficiency.
