China's energy sector is under pressure to achieve secure and affordable supply and a clear decarbonisation path. We examine the longitudinal trajectory of the Chinese electricity supply security and model the near future supply security based on the 12 th 5 year plan. Our deterministic approach combines Shannon-Wiener, Herfindahl-Hirschman and electricity import dependence indices for supply security appraisal. We find that electricity portfolio innovation allows China to provide secure energy supply despite increasing import dependence. It is argued that long-term aggressive deployment of renewable energy will unblock China's coal-biased technological lock-in and increase supply security in all fronts. However, reduced supply diversity in China during the 1990s will not recover until after 2020s due to the long-term coal lock-in that can threaten to hold China's back from realising its full potential.

Natural Gas Hydrate (NGH) is a high combustion efficiency clean energy and its reserve is twice as that of natural gas and petroleum, so NGH is the potential resource which could overcome the increasing energy assumption. One of the essential aspects during the exploitation of NGH is to avoid risk, and here in this work, we summarized the relevant management experience to study the critical safety risk in the exploitation of natural gas hydrate. The problems that must be resolved during NGH exploitation were identified through the research on the comparison of the characteristics of conventional gas hydrate mining methods and potential drilling engineering risks and stratum damages in the processes of exploitation. Combined with typical case analysis of gas hydrate mining, it is concluded that the key for safe NGH exploitation is the changes of stratum stress caused by hydrate decomposition; and all safety management experiences should be based on steady drilling and reasonable exploitation to prevent environment, equipment, persons and other aspects damages from layering and stress changes.

Using a dynamic model from 2005 to 2015, this study assessed China's energy supply security in the provinces along "the Belt and Road". Energy supply security was conceptualized across four dimensions: availability, affordability, acceptability, and energy technology and efficiency. A dynamic model was used to calculate the dynamic weights for each indicator and to examine the variation laws. It was found that the acceptability dimension indicator weights had rapidly increased, indicating that energy supply security had been widely accepted. Smooth weights were found for the availability dimension indicators, indicating that the resources needed to protect basic energy supplies were available. A synthetical energy supply security evaluation index was also analyzed for each "Belt and Road" province using a "quadratic weighting" method, which showed that the index was different in the same provinces in different years and different for different provinces in the same year. For 14 "Belt and Road" provinces, the overall energy supply security was found to have a "V" shape and a general dynamic upward trend, with the trends in the northwest and southeast provinces and along the whole "Belt and Road" found to be consistent. The energy supply security differences between these provinces were analyzed deeply in this paper; it will help us to understand the strengths and weaknesses of energy supply security levels in these provinces. The result will make it easier to cooperate with other provinces or countries along the "Belt and Road" in energy supply.
