Phytophthora infestans causes light blight on potatoes and tomatoes, which has a significant economic impact on agriculture. The management of late blight has been largely dependent on the application of synthetic fungicides, which is not ultimate solution for sustainable agriculture and environmental safety. Biocontrol strategies are expected to be alternative methods to the conventional chemicals in controlling plant diseases in the integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Well‐studied biocontrol agents against P. infestans include fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, and compounds produced by these antagonists, in addition to certain bioactive metabolites produced by plants. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments suggest a potential for using biocontrol in practical late blight disease management. However, the transition of biocontrol to field applications is problematic for the moment, due to low and variable efficacies. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary on these biocontrol strategies and the underlying corresponding mechanisms. To give a more intuitive understanding of the promising biocontrol agents against P. infestans in agricultural systems, we discuss the utilizations, modes of action and future potentials of these antagonists based on their taxonomic classifications. To achieve a goal of best possible results produced by biocontrol agents, it is suggested to work on field trials, strain modifications, formulations, regulations, and optimizations of application. Combined biocontrol agents having different modes of action or biological adaptation traits may be used to strengthen the biocontrol efficacy. More importantly, biological control agents should be applied in the coordination of other existing and forthcoming methods in the IPM programs.This article is protected by copyright. Solanine (SOL) and chaconine (CHA) are glycoalkaloids (GAs) produced mainly by Solanum plants. These plant secondary metabolites affect insect metabolism; thus, they have the potential to be applied as natural plant protection products. However, it is not known which GA concentration induces physiological changes in animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a quantitative analysis of SOL and CHA in the larvae of Tenebrio molitor using LC‒MS to assess how quickly they are eliminated or metabolised. In this experiment, the beetles were injected with 2 μL of 10−5 M SOL or CHA solution, which corresponds to a dosage range of 0.12–0.14 ng/mg body mass. Then, 0.5, 1.5, 8, and 24 h after GA application, the haemolymph (H), gut (G), and the remainder of the larval body (FB) were isolated. GAs were detected in all samples tested for 24 h, with the highest percentage of the amount applied in the FB, while the highest concentration was measured in the H sample. The SOL and CHA concentrations decreased in the haemolymph over time, while they did not change in other tissues. CHA had the highest elimination rate immediately after injection, while SOL slightly later. None of the GA hydrolysis products were detected in the tested samples. One possible mechanism of the detoxification of GAs may be oxidation and/or sequestration. They may be excreted by Malpighian tubules, with faeces or with cuticles during moulting. The results presented are significant because they facilitate the interpretation of studies related to the effects of toxic substances on insect metabolism.

Tetranychus truncatus Ehara (Acari: Tetranychidae) has become one of the major phytophagous pests in China in recent years, and is found on a wide range of host plants. However, little information is available on the population performance of this arthropod pest on potatoes. In this study, we explored the population growth of T. truncatus on two drought-tolerant potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars under laboratory conditions using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Tetranychus truncatus completed its entire life history on both potato cultivars tested, Holland 15 and Longshu 10. There was no significant difference between two potato cultivars in developmental duration. Tetranychus truncatus had shorter adult longevity (20.61 days), adult female longevity (20.41 days), and total female longevity (33.66 days) on Longshu 10 than Holland 15 (21.16 days, 21.19 days, and 34.38 days, respectively). However, it exhibited a higher preadult survival rate, higher fecundity (F = 88.32 eggs per female), and relatively higher population parameters when reared on Longshu 10 than on Holland 15 (F = 75.70 eggs per female). Growth projection also showed that the population size of T. truncatus on Longshu 10 (expand 750-fold) was larger than that on Holland 15 (expand 273-fold) after 60 days. Our results demonstrate that the drought-sensitive potato variety, Holland 15, is relatively resistant to T. truncatus compared with the drought-tolerant variety, Longshu 10, and suggest that T. truncatus exhibited a trade-off between longevity and reproduction on both potato cultivars. Our findings provide information on population prediction, which may aid the management of this pest mite species of potatoes.
