Challenges to capture the big five personality traits in non-WEIRD populations

Abstract: Can personality traits be measured and interpreted reliably across the world? While the use of Big Five personality measures is increasingly common across social sciences, their validity outside of western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) populations is unclear. Adopting a comprehensive psychometric approach to analyze 29 face-to-face surveys from 94,751 respondents in 23 low- and middle-income countries, we show that commonly used personality questions generally fail to measure the inte… Show more

“…The lacking relationship between personality traits and brain structure is in line with the previous finding of Kharabian Masouleh et al (Kharabian Masouleh S et al 2019), reporting little robust correspondence between complex behavior and local brain structure. Though our samples all were from WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) populations (Laajaj R et al 2019), it is possible that functional processes underlying the responses were not comparable across samples. The observation that a more genetically homogeneous group shows stronger phenotypic correlation between personality traits and grey matter structure could have multiple explanations.…”

“…This means that any differences in the belief system estimates cannot be attributable to differences in the items. I estimate the 2 Personality traits are not as reliable in low and middle-income countries compared to high-income countries (Laajaj et al, 2019). This is due to several interrelated reasons (e.g., survey enumerators, education levels).…”

“…An important aspect of the proposal is that these dimensions are not the result of the free inventiveness of researchers but of numerous empirical studies (McCrae & Mõttus, 2019;Sánchez & Ledesma, 2007). Concurrently, several studies support the existence of these five factors, in which genetic predisposition plays a fundamental role Laajaj et al, 2019; van der Linden, ISSN (Digital): 2223-7666 Liberabit, 2020, 26(1), e313 (enero -junio) 2019). Such structure has been proved independent of language, religion, and culture (Allik & McCrae, 2002;Laajaj et al, 2019;McCrae & Terraciano, 2005;van der Linden, 2019).…”

According to these authors, the fact that these regularities are manifested in diverse cultures and contexts suggests the presence of basic characteristics in humans.…”
