Changes in free polyamines and gene expression during peach flower development

Abstract: Free polyamine contents and expressions of five genes encoding for polyamine biosynthetic enzymes were investigated at four different stages during peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch cv. Akatsuki) flower development. Fresh mass of peach flowers increased, accompanied by reduction in contents of total polyamines and putrescine/spermidine ratio due to decrease in putrescine content. Spermidine, the largest fraction, and spermine, the least part, underwent minor change. Expressions of the five key genes involved in … Show more

“…Except odc, the remaining genes were more highly induced in nodules colonized by the HSS− strain where intriguingly, no accumulation of Spd Mean values followed by the same letter do not differ (P ≤ 0.05) using an LSD test and Spm was detected. Inconsistency between gene expression and PA content has been reported in several studies (Alcázar et al 2006;Hummel et al 2004;Liu and Moriguchi 2007) and should be related to the existence of post-transcriptional and/or translational regulation mechanisms for SPDS and/or S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase activities in which Homspd and/or 4-Abcad could be involved. The functioning of the nodule metabolism was assessed by the determination of the NFR and the nodule biomass (Fig.…”

“…Upregulation of MADS and FLC in TG9 suggests that overexpression of MdSPDS1 has led to alteration of gene network associated with flowering in the transgenic plant. Although it will need time to compare the flowering dynamics between the transgenic line and WT, the polyamines have been shown to participate in the physiological process of flowering in plants [52, 53]. …”

“…More than 70 genes are involved in the flowering process in different plant species, which span perception of environmental stimuli, morphological changes in meristem tissues, transportation of carbohydrates, and other functions [107]. A series of proteins and hormones, as well as their transportation, are also involved in this process [65,66,82,85], as well as a series of free polyamines that express themselves during floral development in peach [108].…”

“…This has been also described in peach, reporting an intensive production of mRNA in the apical meristem at the onset of flower initiation. [52,108].…”
