Changes in soil properties of four agro-ecological zones of Tangail district in Bangladesh

Abstract: This study was undertaken to investigate the changes in status of soil properties in four AEZs (AEZ 28, AEZ 9, AEZ 8 and AEZ 7) of Tangail district in Bangladesh over the span of the years. In 2017, the pH value of four AEZ was ranged from strongly acidic to slightly acidic but before 2000 it was strongly acidic to slightly alkaline. The present OM status was medium and before 2000 it was also medium. The present N status was very low, low, low and low, respectively but before 2000 it was low, medium, low and … Show more

“…The composition of land type in the AEZ is 56% high, 18% medium high, 7% medium low, 9% low and 10% homestead and water bodies (FAO, 1988). Characteristically, soil texture is loamy, pH 4.8-5.5 (Kumar et al, 2018). The soils are low (1.0 -1.7%) in organic matter content and fertility (BBS, 2016).…”

“…Mirsharai Upazila boasts a total wetland expanse spanning 7,893.60 hectares, with 1,693. 84 hectares designated for open water capture fisheries and 6,199.76 hectares allocated to culture fisheries. Table 1 provides a comprehensive breakdown of land distribution, highlighting wetland distribution for capture and culture fisheries across various unions and Paurashava.…”

“…An ideal pond depth of 2 meters and a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 are considered optimal for fish production. Notably, the soil pH value, water quality, and land type, particularly Medium Low Land (MLL) in different unions of Mirsharai, are predominantly suitable for both capture and culture fisheries, aligning with the prerequisites for successful aquaculture practices [84,85].…”

“…The pH level is considered good in Manikganj compare to Sylhet because all of the samples from Manikganj District were within the standard limit but in Sylhet some samples were lower than minimum standard, evensome areas were high acidic to high alkaline. Plants roots were unable to absorb nutrients when the pH level is high, and when it is too low, they absorb too much nutrients which causes it to die (Kumar et al, 2019).…”
