Changes of the concentrations of dissolved chemical compounds migrating into ground water through biogeochemical barriers in an agricultural landscape

Abstract: Forms of nitrogen , N-NH 4 + , N-org) and phosphorus (P-PO 4 -3 , P-org) were investigated in ground and surface water as well as in precipitation and run-off. The highest concentration of all the investigated compounds was determined in the drain and in run-off. This investigation shows that afforestations and small ponds function as very efficient biogeochemical barriers with regard to N-NO 3 -and P-PO 4 -3 . They do not, however, limit the spread of P-org.

“…It proves the protective dimension of the study and contradicts the research hypothesis. Numerous studies show that a network of areas with trees improves the habitat conditions and reduces the spread of pollution -which is particularly important in an agricultural landscape [38][39]. The extension of built-up and afforested areas will cause a considerable loss of farmland.…”

“…This impact was also distinct in the River Nielba below the inlet of this ditch, where the P load increased 7 times. This impact was less distinct in the case of N because the studies were conducted during spring, when the release of N as nitrates from the agricultural areas is the most intensive (Szajdak et al 2009). The loads of nutrients inflowing to Lake Łeknenskie at the time of the increased river water level in spring were comparable to the values noted in 2012 in the case of P (2.23 mg P d -1 ), but significantly higher for N (over 300 kg N d -1 ).…”

“…It is known that in recent years the climate has undergone major changes, increasing the average annual temperature and the lack or unevenness of precipitation being the most important factors influencing the production of a culture (Şimon and Ignea, 2018). In order to reduce the impact of these changes on crops, researchers from all over the world have sought for the most efficient technological alternatives to produce quantitatively and qualitatively yields in line with plant needs and current climate change (Szajdak et al, 2003;Şimon et al, 2014). The main directions in which research has been carried out and which have achieved results with applicability have been the implementation of conservative tillage systems that have evolved over time (Guş et al, 2003), the reduction of imputations by rotation of zoned varieties and the introduction of leguminous into crops.…”
