Chaotic Behavior of Soil Radon Gas and Applications

Abstract: A b s t r a c tThe soil 222 Rn concentration non-linear patterns are investigated by the application of various chaos methodologies based on 70 272 measurement data from the East Anatolian Fault Zone, which is one of the world's most active faults. Among these methodologies are Lyapunov exponent, surrogate data, rescaled range (R/S) analysis, Fourier spectrum, phase space reconstruction, mutual information, false nearest neighbors, and correlation dimension. The results indicate that the nonlinear dynamical ap… Show more

“…Radon ( 222 Rn) is a radioactive element with a half-life of 3.82 days, formed in the Earth's Crust by the radioactive decay of 226 Ra in the 238 U decay series. Faults and fractures are preferential migration pathways for radon gas and carrier gases (CO 2 ), from the deep layers of the Earth's Crust to the surface [1][2][3] . The radon signal monitored in soils contains both local and remote information and is influenced by many environmental factors [4][5][6][7] .…”

“…Unlike our previous study of complex dynamic system "Chaotic Behavior of Soil Radon Gas and Applications", in this research we used ANFIS model which consist of five layers (Fig. 2) [19]. Water depth, total hardness, electrical conductivity, and pH was used as input parameters and total alpha radioactivity was defined as output parameter for the creation of the ANFIS architecture.…”

“…Rn is produced by the radium series in uranium‐bearing materials. Emission of Rn through active fault zones can be enhanced by seismic, volcanic and fault activities, which is demonstrated by high concentrations and flux of soil Rn worldwide (Ambrosino, Sabbarese, Roca, Giudicepietro, & Chiodini, 2020; Ambrosino, Sabbarese, Roca, Giudicepietro, & De Cesare, 2020; İçhedef et al., 2014; Kamislioglu and Külahci, 2016; Oh & Kim, 2015; Sabbarese et al., 2020; T. F. Yang et al., 2004). Anomalous discharge of CO 2 ‐rich fluid was directly measured during the 1965–1967 Matsushiro earthquakes (Cappa et al., 2009).…”
